A Boy Without A Past
Galleus Va’an was never a man for the simple life. Born into Eorzea an orphan, raised by farmers in the outskirts of Gridania, he spent the majority of his childhood working in the farmlands of Bentbranch Meadows.
As a boy he had an insatiable curiosity about his parents. While tilling the fields or clearing the chocobo stables, he would ask his would-be family about where he came from. In response he would always get the same reaction – the slight shuffling of feet, the inability to look him in the eyes, and the whispers… always the whispers.
Instead he would be rewarded with a new task, a new chore, to help take his mind off what he felt he was denied. In time he came to find the work a rewarding distraction. Every chore became a quest. Every challenge became an opportunity to learn. Yet underneath it all, his mind never stopped churning. He knew his life was meant for more than digging through the soils of Gridania. And then the Calamity came…
The Warriors of Light
The Calamity ushered in not just the beginning of the Seventh Umbral Era, but the beginning of Galleus’ new life. Years after the destruction and turmoil of the battle of Cartaneau Flats, mysterious adventurers began appearing in Eorzea. The news of such events did not take long to reach Galleus’ ears and, more importantly, pique his curiosity. People appearing without a past, people unknown to the world – people like him.
In a whirlwind of chance, he packed up what few belongings he had managed to call his own and set off for the city-state of Gridania. With the assistance of a kind peddler named Bremondt, Galleus made it safely to his destination and began to form connections within the city proper. As he learned more of the Warriors of Light, more questions came to him than answers, but for the first time in as long as he could remember he felt he was coming closer to finding the truth about his past.
The longer he stayed in the city however, the more he could feel his senses…. evolving. It wasn’t something he could easily put into words, but it was the only way he could describe it. The wind carried with it promises of things to come. The water whispered to him truths long forgotten. The earth roiled in anger with every footfall. Frightened by these experiences, he sought the guidance of the Conjurer’s guild. There he would meet his master, E-Sumi-Yan, and begin his quest to become one of the most powerful Conjurer’s in Eorzea.
Before long Galleus had surpassed his master in the arts of the Conjurer. After many trials and a few missteps, he found himself before two sibling Padjals – Raya-O-Senna and A-Ruhn-Senna. Here he would learn the skills needed to become a White Mage and further his communion with the elements. The ebb and flow of nature no longer penetrated his senses – instead they were one being, one consciousness. It was this clarity of spirit that allowed him to perform the Quieting to quell the fury of the Guardian Tree in Gridania; a task with which he cemented his mastery of the White Mage arts.
In addition to furthering his calling, he also found himself in the employ of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. A resistance movement, their intention was to stop the advancing Garlean Empire war-machine that had returned to threaten all of Eorzea. With the help of friends and adventurers he had met along the way, they prevented the Garlean invasion and saved the three major city-states from total annihilation. As proud as he was of his accomplishments, as much as he wanted to be satisfied with how far he had come, the voices in his head still plagued him. Who… Are… You…
It was around this time that rumors of strange appearances began to circulate again. Not of a mass appearance of unknown adventurers, but of a woman claiming to be from another world. It was a strange sensation that rippled through Galleus as he heard the description of events. Something resonated in him, similar to when he felt the sensations of the elements, but altogether different. It felt like the sweet memory of a song that you can’t quite remember the words too as the melody comes in pieces. Determined to find an answer, he sought out the traveler.
Following the rumors he finally came face to face with her – Lightning. Her attire and attitude was as strange as her name, but in the brief times they spoke he felt more and more certain that they were connected. She claimed to have been transported here from another world, yet with no recollection of how she appeared or why she was there. It all sounded so unbelievable, yet deep in his heart he knew she was telling the truth. If it were possible for someone to have been transported here once, could it have happened before? Can it happen again? The truth would be ever elusive to Galleus, as Lightning was whisked away as suddenly as she appeared, leaving yet more questions than answers of his past.
