1) What was the first video game you ever played?
I don’t really remember. It might have been Adventure? The first game I played with any sort of interest and understanding was Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt. Technically, Duck Hunt was first, but it was part of that NES combo game that had both.

2) What are some of your favorites games, past & present?
Bioshock, Punch Quest, Team Fortress 2, Crash ‘n’ the Boys: Street Challenge, Devil May Cry 3, Blazblue

3) What is your preferred platform, PC or console?
PC, former Sony fanboy.

4) Do your friends or family or co-workers know you like MMO’s?
A couple of my coworkers play FFXIV, but they’re on different servers. Most of my friends and family know but don’t share the interest.

5) What, in your opinion, makes a great video game?
An appropriate level of challenge. Nowadays, more and more games are just about handing things to players either with no effort at all or after the player pays money. If I wanted to throw money at something and be entertained while I sat and did nothing, I’d watch a movie or read something (which is awesome in its own right, don’t get me wrong). I understand that sometimes, I want to be sort of mindlessly engaged in something with little challenge, and I’ll play Tiny Wings or Tetris. Other times, I want to bang my head against a wall until the wall is bleeding more than my head is, and I’ll go play Devil May Cry on Dante-Must-Die mode. I play games because I like conquering things.

1) What currently is your favorite job/class in the game?
It shifts a lot. I’ll always love my WAR, but right now I’m going to have to say MNK. I’ve finally gotten to the point where I’ve learned the stance system, positionals, and DoT priority that I can shift attacks on the fly and rely on muscle memory. Sometimes, I’ll stop paying attention just enough to marvel at how fast my fingers are moving around the keyboard.

2) Do you have a favorite race, and if so, why?
Roegadyn for life, yo! I don’t think I will ever switch, even when more races are released. At least, not for very long. No other race fits me or my character as well as Roegadyn.

3) What single job/class, if any, would you like to see added?
If done the way I’m thinking, Blue Mage. If it ever actually happened, it would probably be just another flavor of Black Mage mechanically. But I have this mental image of a Blue Mage going up against Titan, watching all his friends die or get knocked off, and throwing out some pitiful little spell as a last ditch effort before getting crushed. The Blue Mage then goes to Wanderer’s Palace and learns Everyone’s Grudge from the Tonberry King. The Blue Mage then goes back to Titan and the same thing almost happens. Fueled by the deaths of his comrades, the Blue Mage unleashes the biggest cast of Everyone’s Grudge that Titan has ever seen.

4) What, outside of the above, would you like to see in Eorzea?
The first thing I would like to see is overworld areas that are actually dangerous for solo players. It probably won’t happen, given the game’s emphasis on pick-up groups, but the world should be a little more dangerous. Another thing I’d like to see is related to stories I heard about FFXI. Players would fish off the sides of the ships that they had to take between cities. Every so often, one of the fishers would fish up this really big and dangerous sea monster that would attack the ship. I wanted that, some big boss that could only be triggered by a fisher. I think there’s an S-class hunt monster that works like this, but I’d like something with a little less RNG and a little more “OSHITRUNRUNRUNRUNRUN!!!”.

…also, please add Doom Train.

5) What do you like most about the game?
The single-character versatility. I don’t really care that it doesn’t make sense to be a master of pretty much everything. I was terrified in the beginning of 2.0 of choosing a role that players wouldn’t want in their party in later content patches. SE has done a really good job keeping all the classes balanced, but I picked WAR when 2.0 was released. No one wanted a WAR for end-game back then, so I switched to PLD. The fact that the game allowed me to switch without starting over on a new character is one of the game’s greatest strengths. I also like that race doesn’t entirely matter to gameplay. I may be a big dumb Roegadyn, but I still White Mage just as good as smart Elezen.

1) What is your impression of Chaos Theory so far?
My first encounter with CT was just passing TW on the streets of Limsa. Whatever he was wearing on that day caught my eye. It was the strangest marvel of muscle, feathers, paint, and dead animals I had ever seen. But my actual first impression was when I attended Noctura and Lenus’s eternal bond ceremony. It was the first time I participated in an event in-game with a community where the event didn’t have the primary goal of getting better or rare stuff after beating something up. We just went and had an amazing time. If this group could pull off events like that and actually have fun with them, then I knew this was a good place.

2) Whether or not you are a long-time MMORPG’er or a newbie, tell us what your ideal gaming community would provide, and do, for you.
I dunno really. Despite being an end-game player, I still consider myself an MMO newbie. This is the first game I’ve played that has a remotely accessibly community at all. I suppose one thing could be that my ideal community enjoys every type of content. There’ll be one group that fights to the very end of end-game, then there’ll be another group that loves chocobo racing, another group that runs low-level dungeons, and yet another group that will run the Main Scenario dungeons and not skip all the cutscenes if asked. The most extreme example in this game would probably be that one group with high turnover that’s still enjoying the Sightseeing Log. They might not exist now, but that’s what I’d like.

1) What, in your life so far, are you most proud of?
I accomplished my life goal of doing interesting things with computers as a career. It’s not ground-breaking research or anything, but I’m not answering help desk calls either.

2) What goals do you have for your future, either in-game or real life, or both?
Probably just expand my social network. I’ve worked very hard to overcome my shyness, and I think it’s time I started taking advantage of that.

3) What is one challenge you’ve had to overcome recently?
Buying a house (IRL, not in-game).

4) What is something about you that many people don’t know?
I juggle fire…and occasionally get paid for it. Yes, it’s real. Yes, it’s hot. Yes, I have burned myself and it’s not that bad.

5) If you could visit any country or place in the world that you have not been to, where would it be, and why?
That’s a tough one. I’ve already conquered my big three: Japan, England, and Scotland. Maybe Italy? Yeah, let’s go with that. Italy.
